"Secretariat" is one of those movies that entertains but feels on the surface and more like a TV movie of the week. Diane Lane plays Penny Tweedy, a woman determined to keep her farm and keep her horse, and the gamble payed-off beautifully. The horse, Secretariat, went on to win the triple crown in 1973.

John Malcovich plays the comical trainer in an inspirational movie that is part horse racing drama and part family drama.

"Secretariat" is directed by Randall Wallace, he wrote "Braveheart," "Starman" and "Pearl Harbor." His latest isn't in the same league as "Seabiscut," but it works as family viewing and as a surface history lesson.

Secretariat was a tremendous athlete, I just wish this film was on the same level as his track record.
