The Taking of Pelham 123 is a solid, exciting remake of an even better 1974 original. Oscar-winner Denzel Washington plays the New York City track man, working the lines one afternoon, when all of a sudden a group of bad guys, led by a menacing John Travolta, hi-jack a subway car filled with frightened passengers.
Rather than play to cliches, director Tony Scott has created a tightly wound, well-written, suspense thriller. Claustrophobic one minute, wide open the next, and filled with good actors, including James Gandolfini as the mayor of New York City.
The Taking of Pelham 123 is rated R for language and violence and does not disappoint. Travolta gives his best performance in years and Denzel is right on the money. This one is a big summer surprise.
