CHICAGO (AP) — Maria Pinto has returned to the fashion world with a collection she's launching this weekend on the crowd-funding Kickstarter website.
The fashion designer is famous for dressing first lady Michelle Obama and Oprah Winfrey, but she closed her Chicago boutique in 2010 amid the poor economy.
She took time off and worked as creative director at the Mark Shale store in Chicago. But now she's launching a more affordable clothing line just days before New York Fashion Week starts Thursday.
The capsule collection launching on Kickstarter is her first collection since spring 2010.
She says she's embracing Kickstarter because it's "fashion meeting technology." She's looking to raise $250,000 with a collection of dresses, jackets and scarves priced at between $75 and $250. Her dresses previously retailed at more than $900.
