CARROLLTON — The Creekview Mustangs faced a tremendously difficult football game on Saturday morning, but the team played with heart.

Players ran onto the field carrying the letter jacket of 17-year-old senior linebacker Kiet Nguyen. He was found dead inside his home on Friday; the cause of death has not yet been determined.

His teammates wore towels with his number — 9. There was also a moment of silence before kickoff.

Kiet was loved by Creekview students. "He wanted the best in his life, and the best in everyone else's life," said teammate Miquan Robinson.

"He meant like a best friend I've never had... he was always there," added classmate Erika Castaneda.

On Friday night, hundreds of students filled campus for a touching candlelight memorial. At that vigil, his football family pledged to win on Saturday for Kiet.

They did — in a a 24-21 victory over Timber Creek.

In a note posted on the school's website, Creekview principal Joseph La Puma said counseling will be available for grieving classmates.
