NEWS 8 INVESTIGATES
DALLAS — A News 8 investigation into possible cheating by this year's 4-A state basketball champs has caught the attention of Dallas Independent School District officials, who are calling for a full review of the facts.
Our investigation uncovered possible evidence that one of the star players for the Kimball Knights — Keith Frazier — may have transferred to the school in violation of state regulations.
University Interscholastic League rules prohibit a student athlete from changing schools for athletic purposes.
Frazier's mother told district officials last November she moved to Dallas after her landlord suddenly raised her rent in Irving.
But a copy of the rental agreement obtained by News 8 shows Frazier's mother apparently broke the lease on the Irving property, allowing her to move her son to Kimball.
DISD officials say issues raised by our investigation are cause for concern. "We want them to win fair and square; we want them to play by the rules and win by the rules, said district spokesman Jon Dahlander. "That said, there is a process that is established by UIL, and we want every school and every District Executive Committee member to pay attention to that process."
If DISD reconsiders the facts of Frazier's transfer and determines he should not have been eligible, Kimball may have to forfeit its state crown.
