CORPUS CHRISTI -- While most everyone was relaxing and enjoy this Labor Day, emergency crews were dispatched Monday morning to a bizarre accident along the Bayfront in Corpus Christi.

Emergency Crews were called out to Swantner Park at about 10:45 a.m. Monday after reports of a vehicle that drove into the water.

The driver, Mrs. Padgett, told Corpus Christi police that she was backing out of the parking lot in the 5100 block of Ocean Drive when she felt something brush up against her legs. She told officers that she has had a rodent problem in her vehicle as of recent and thinking she felt a rat brushing up against her leg, she panicked and tried to get out of the car in a hurry.

She thought she had put it in park but that was not the case.

Police said the vehicle was in drive and it rolled into the bay. A tow truck had to be called in to remove the SUV from the water.

The U.S. Coast Guard and the General Land Office checked to see if any of the vehicle’s gasoline or oil had leaked out, but it was all clear.

Thankfully there were no injuries, and the driver did not receive a citation.
