LITTLE ELM - Little Elm residents Juan and Nancy Tristan never expected to hit rock bottom financially, but they did.

"[I] was laid off on my tenth anniversary, basically," Mrs. Tristan said. "And then my husband was laid off. So, we were both unemployed and we had three kids with a fourth in college. So, we didn't know what to do."

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul in Frisco stepped in and helped the Tristans with their mortgage. The non-profit is dedicated to serving people who suddenly find themselves in a crunch in the Frisco Independent School District and surrounding communities.

"We help anyone," said Pam Romero, Society of St. Vincent de Paul. "You don't have to be Catholic; you don't need to be Christian. You just have to be someone who needs assistance."

Volunteer case workers meet with clients who have to show proof of their financial situation. If they can't help you, they will refer you to someone who can.

"A blessing," said Mr. Tristan of their help. "This time period actually helped us to see what people are out there for."

The Frisco group has about 60 volunteers who have helped 331 families since 2009. Volunteers have contributed more 7,000 hours in assistance and distributed more than $80,000 in funds to help clients like the Tristans get back on their feet.

"[They are] very caring, open arms, not judging, which also compelled me to go ahead and volunteer and be a part of that so I could try to reach out to other people as well," Mrs. Tristan said.

"We're all God's children," Romero said. "We need to give back. We're his hands."

For their tireless work to assist the poor, WFAA names St. Vincent de Paul in Frisco an "Our Neighbor."

All money used to assist the poor comes from donations and fund raising. If you would like to contribute or if you know someone WFAA could name an Our Neighbor contact cizzy@wfaa.com.
