Today's Our Neighbor is a man who opens a lot of doors for patients and drives them to be their best.
The Senior Van Program at Baylor Hospital is a free service for patients who need a ride to their doctor appointments.
Baylor is dependent on volunteers, like James Hall, who uses the hospital van to pick up patients at home.
"I've been doing this for about 13 or 14 years. It is just something I thought I would like to do. It keeps me busy and I get a lot of enjoyment out of it," said Hall.
He said the hospital always needs volunteers to help citizens who don't have a ride.
Many patients don't drive and wouldn't be able to see the doctor without the help.
"I think it's a wonderful service. We didn't have anything like this in Chicago," said one patient.
"It's part of family for some of them because they don't have anyone else to talk to, they live by themselves," said Hall.
Hall picks up patients from all walks of life. Some tell him their life story, others just enjoy the ride.
A $3 donation is appreciated. Most are happy to pay, grateful to be getting to their much needed treatment.
Hall hopes the senior van service is helping people live longer by getting them to the doctor.
