DALLAS- In Wednesday morning's "After the Bell" report, the Winter Olympics may be taking place in Canada right now, but a group of Richardson junior high students are going for the gold in another type of Olympics.

The seventh and eighth graders at Richardson's Westwood Junior High are competing against each other to earn a trip to the state's "Science Olympiad."

"It motivates us," said Keira Gregory, an either grader. "It inspires us."

Last year's trophy sits in the classroom and is a big motivator for the students.

If the students qualify through regionals, they earn a trip to the Science Olympiad in April, which is held at Texas A & M.

The science club is just one of many free after-school clubs offered.

Downstairs, students are cooking up a storm. At Chefs Academy, they learn food and kitchen safety, manners, etiquette, food presentation. But, best of all, they learn to make meals that are healthy and inexpensive. Students in the WOW program are able to attend two different courses each day after school.
