DALLAS - Retirement doesn't mean slowing down for one North Dallas couple who are giving back in a big way and putting big smiles on a lot of little faces.
Doug and Elizabeth Kilgore have been volunteering for years at the Neighborhood Service Council. Mrs. Kilgore helps tutors students in the "Study Buddy" room.
"It's fun to be here with the kids," she said. "They really appreciate having us come and they are so excited when we come in."
Lezly Torres, a 10-year-old who just completed third grade, called Mrs. Kilgore "the best."
"We have so much fun," she said. "I can't believe she's here."
A few doors down, Mr. Kilgore tackles a cranky computer. He's the organizations "go-to-guy" and is always happily on call. When not fixing a computer, Mr. Kilgore might be driving a van, picking-up students from six Richardson schools.
Shawn Ainsworth runs the Neighborhood Service Council and says the Kilgores' volunteering time is priceless.
"Just to know that I'm not bothering them when I call them, especially Doug, because I call him last minute for things I need within five minutes," Ainsworth said. "You know, 'I need a projector in five minutes, can you help me?' He's always there to help me. I feel very fortunate, not only to have such good volunteers, but such reliable volunteers."
The Neighborhood Service Council is looking for van drivers. Those interested or know someone who might be can contact the organization at www.nsci.org.
