GARLAND -- Some local police officers and firefighters are stepping up and stepping into the boxing ring to help some North Texas families.
They're in full training for their annual charity tournament called Guns and Hoses. The tournament is all volunteer, and participants include officers and firefighter from across the metroplex.
On Friday, News 8 got an early look inside the Garland Police Boxing Gym at some of the on-going training in anticipation of the event, which is less than two weeks away.
The money raised goes to families of fallen authorities killed in the line of duty. Organizers say the annual event is a way to rally around those who really need support, and to show them they are never alone.
"I feel like we walk out of the house everyday thinking that we are going to come home and when we don't, the support mechanism has to kick-in and that's us," said a participant. ”We have to make that family believe and feel like we're always going to be there for them."
The boxing tournament is being held in Mesquite at Resistol Arena on October 22.
