DALLAS - A carjacking suspect was arrested after a SWAT standoff and hostage situation at a Dallas drug store Sunday.

Officers spotted the suspect’s allegedly stolen vehicle early Sunday afternoon, and once he became aware of the officers he fled to a Walgreen’s on the 2400 block of West Ledbetter Drive.

The suspect, later identified as Joe Torres, took one person hostage inside the store, holding her at gunpoint while others were evacuated. He later exited the store with no weapon in hand, surrendered to police and was taken into custody.

A large SWAT presence responded to the scene. No injuries were reported.

Torres, is also suspected in a string of local fast food restaurant robberies, police said. He was placed on probation last October on three counts of sexual assault of a child.

Prosecutors filed a motion seeking to revoke his probation last Monday after he tested positive for drug usage, did not register as a sex offender and failed to participate in sex offender treatment as required.
