Car thief suspect shot after backing into officers, Arlington police say

Suspect in stolen car hits two police officers

ARLINGTON - A car thief suspect was shot by police after he backed a stolen vehicle into two officers Friday afternoon, Arlington police said.

The injured suspect was transported in unknown condition from the scene, located outside the Baymont Inn & Suites in the 2400 block of Diplomacy Drive, said Lt. Chris Cook, a spokesman with Arlington police.

Police identified the man as 39-year old Shaun Veloz. He will face charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer and unauthorized use of motor vehicle, police said.

Authorities said they were first called to the scene at about 10 a.m. Upon their arrival, police witnessed one suspect run into the hotel while two others remained in the car.

Officers were able to detain the female passenger but the driver refused to exit the vehicle.

Cook said the suspect was then shot by one of two officers, who were struck by the stolen vehicle as it backed into them.

One officer was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and the other treated at the scene.

The suspect who fled into the hotel was also apprehended, but later released at the scene, Cook said.

The female was released at the scene after being interviewed.
