One dead after Kaufman Co. police chase ends in shooting

A shootout in Van Zandt County that ended with one suspect dead in Mabank. News 8's Rebecca Lopez has more from the scene.

One suspect was shot dead at the scene after a police chase involving wanted persons that went from Kaufman County to Van Zandt County.

Another was shot and transported to a Tyler, Texas hospital. Three people were in custody, according to the Kaufman County Sheriff's Office.

The suspects led officers to an area along County Road 2718 just north of Mabank, Texas, after refusing to make a stop attempted by Texas Rangers around 1 p.m.

Department of Public Safety Officials said that after a brief chase, the suspects got out of their pickup and fired at the officers.

Two guns were found at the scene. No details were released as to why officers were looking for the suspects.

The officers involved did not suffer any injuries. They will be placed on routine administrative leave while the investigation is conducted.
