Man arrested for fatally stabbing brother during drunken argument

MESQUITE -- A 38-year-old man is charged with murder after he stabbed his brother to death in the heat of a drunken argument.

According to police, at 11:43 p.m. Saturday, they received a family violence call in the 600 block of Via Corona. Responding officers at the scene found 46-year-old John Helget bleeding from stab wounds.

Family members told police that after an evening of heavy drinking, Helget and his brother, 38-year-old Mathew Helget, got into an argument, then the younger brother drew a knife and stabbed his older sibling numerous times in the neck.

The victim was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

Mathew Helget was arrested at the scene and charged with 1st degree murder. His bond was set at $1 million.
