DALLAS — The off-duty Dallas police officer who shot and killed a teenager inside a Taco Bell restaurant Sunday morning was involved in a previous off-duty shooting incident, investigators said.

Officer Courtenay Howard was on his way to work when he stopped for food at the restaurant at Camp Wisdom Road and Cockrell Hill Boulevard around 10 a.m. He said he spotted a man openly carrying a marijuana cigarette.

When Howard approached 18-year-old Kendrick McDaniel, he said the teen reached for a gun, so Howard shot him in self-defense.

McDaniel died later at a hospital. Investigators said a weapon was recovered as evidence.

Police said Officer Howard previously shot a suspect a few years ago when he said he was defending his home.
