Dallas officer arrested for allegedly choking girlfriend

DALLAS - A Dallas Police officer was arrested early Sunday after allegedly choking his girlfriend in a downtown Dallas hotel room.

According to an arrest affidavit, Senior Cpl. Jose Gamez and his girlfriend were in an argument in their room at the Omni Hotel around 2:45 a.m. when Gamez shook her, threw her on the bed and choked her.

"When [his girlfriend] arose off the bed, [Gamez] stood behind her, grabbed her around her neck and applied pressure causing [her] to be unable to breathe," the affidavit states.

Officers who responded to the scene heard yelling coming from inside the room and knocked on the door, the affidavit says. Gamez answered and was arrested.

Gamez, a 7-year veteran of the force, was booked into the Dallas County Jail  on a family violence charge just after 8 a.m. Sunday. He was released on $15,000 bond around 4 p.m.

He has been placed on administrative leave while an internal investigation is conducted.

In August of 2014, Gamez fatally shot a man suspected in a separate shooting at a Dallas gas station. Police said the suspect, Sergio Ramos, refused to drop his gun when approached by Gamez, who was off-duty at the time.

Gamez wasn't charged for shooting Ramos.
