FORT WORTH — A man who fatally shot a 14-year-old boy Thursday night told police he didn't know the gun was loaded, read a report from the Fort Worth Police Department.

While police originally reported the teen was killed in the shooting, the victim remained in critical condition at John Peter Smith Hospital until about 3 p.m., when he was declared dead.

Just before midnight, police were first alerted to the shooting that took place in the 3000 block of Hanger Ave.

According to police, the 24-year-old shooter took out the gun while hanging out with several people. The man told police he thought the gun wasn't loaded when he aimed it at the 14-year-old victim and fired. The young boy was shot just above his left eye and the shooter fled the scene.

The teen was transported to JPS Hospital.

Authorities said they were able to locate and take the suspect into custody early Friday morning. He was questioned and then released.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

Police didn't reveal the identity of the victim or the shooter.
