ARLINGTON — The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has confirmed that a woman found dead inside a burning Arlington apartment Sunday night was the victim of a homicide.
The report says 26-year-old Mechelle Gandy died as the result of multiple stab wounds. Gandy's one-year-old son was also found dead in the rubble.
Firefighters pulled Gandy from the the apartment in the 2200 block of Presidents Corner Drive in Arlington after the first alarm went out at 10:15 p.m. Sunday.
"They found injuries on her that didn't jibe with what they were getting from the fire itself," said Arlington police spokeswoman Tiara Ellis Richard. "They weren't consistent with a fire specifically."
Firefighters then called Arlington police to the scene.
The child was not discovered until after the fire was extinguished. No cause of death has yet been released.
Arlington police said they believe a fire was set at the apartment in an attempt to cover up the crime.
