FORT WORTH — A SWAT team in Fort Worth used tear gas to end a standoff early Monday morning.
Authorities said they were called to the scene after a 27-year-old man fired several shots from inside his apartment at about 12:15 a.m. in the 3800 block of Birkdale Dr.
"Several of those rounds actually penetrated his neighbor's apartment unit," said Capt. Scott Conn.
When police arrived to the scene, the suspect's wife exited the residence, but the man refused to leave.
"It was a situation in which we could not leave until we were able to get this person under control and retrieve that weapon," Conn said.
The captain estimated about a dozen residents were evacuated as the standoff was underway.
Several hours into the standoff, Fort Worth officers fired tear gas into the home. The suspect was arrested and faces a charge of deadly conduct. Conn said he'll also undergo a mental evaluation.
Police said the suspect was also involved in another incident last week, but didn't reveal further details. Authorities said his wife told officers her husband was battling mental issues.
The name of the suspect wasn't released.
