DALLAS – The 22-year-old suspect accused of robbing and killing a Richardson man has now been charged with raping a woman in her Martel Avenue apartment that same day.
Jose Portillo was arrested last week after a botched home invasion. Police say he attempted to break into a Richardson woman’s home but she was able to escape. Soon after fleeing the complex, Portillo shoved a gun in a driver's face and ordered that he give him the car.
The driver, however, wrestled the weapon away, spurring Portillo, 22, to run again. Police caught him trying to break into a nearby home.
The gun Portillo used was stolen from the home of Jimmy Wayne Donawho, a Richardson man who was stabbed to death during a Sept. 7 robbery. Richardson police say Portillo, an undocumented El Salvadoran, confessed to the killing.
Dallas police were also investigating him for the Sept. 7 rape of a woman who lived in an apartment on Martel Avenue. On Monday, police say investigators were able to charge Portillo with that rape.
He’s now charged with aggravated sexual assault, aggravated robbery, burglary of a habitation and capital murder. He is being held in the Dallas County Jail on $1.25 million bond.
Records also show he’s been red-flagged for being in the country illegally.
