HOUSTON — Prosecutors are painting a sadistic picture of two accused teen killers charged with the murder of a 15-year-old girl. They say 17-year old Jose Reyes convinced a friend to kidnap and brutally murder a teen girl to help him "sell his soul to the devil."
"They discussed the fact that Mr. Reyes had sold his soul to the devil, and if they ended up killing this teenager, this would allow the 16-year-old to also sell his soul to the devil," said Assistant Harris County Attorney John Jordan on Tuesday.
Corianne Cervantes’ body was discovered this weekend inside a vacant apartment at the Bay Apartments in the 16400 block of El Camino Real. She disappeared days earlier.
Police say a neighbor passing by noticed the second floor apartment door was open and stopped to check.
He walked in to find the body surrounded by what detectives call "religious cult items."
Investigators say the girl had been physically and sexually assaulted. The injuries included an upside down crucifix carved on her stomach.
"What happened in that vacant apartment was sadistic," John Jordan said. "What will eventually happen in the 338th district courtroom will be justice."
Prosecutors say the 16-year-old suspect knew Cervantes. They both attended the same alternative school in the Clear Creek ISD. They believe the victim likely entered the apartment willingly.
Prosecutors say the Reyes family is cooperating. Their son has been charged with capital murder and if convicted, he could receive life in prison with the eligibility of parole.
The unidentified 16-year-old has been referred to the Harris County Juvenile Probation Authority on a charge of capital murder.
