DALLAS — A Dallas police officer shot and killed a man during a traffic stop in Oak Cliff early Saturday evening.
Officials said no police were injured during the incident in the 3600 block of Folklore Trail, just west of the intersection of Polk Street and Highway 67.
According to police, the driver — identified as 21-year-old John Robert Husband of Dallas — was seen to have a gun after pulling over the car. The officer fired his weapon in self-defense, police said.
But several witnesses told News 8 the officer shot the suspect in the back.
"They arrested him and they had him in handcuffs, and somehow he broke out the handcuffs, and in the process, he took off running," said one witness.
Husband was taken to Methodist Charlton Medical Center for treatment, but later died.
"There will be an internal investigation as well as an investigation done by the special investigations unit," said police spokesman Sgt. Warren Mitchell. "That's customary with every police shooting, so we'll just have to wait and see how that turns out."
Mitchell said it has not been determined if the officer involved in the shooting will be placed on leave.
