Man run over
HOUSTON — A woman was jailed late Monday after intentionally running over and killing her husband in southwest Harris County, investigators said.
Harris County Sheriff’s deputies were on the way to a disturbance call around 10:40 p.m. when they came across a car sitting in the middle of the road on Balarama at Beckford.
The deputies stopped to investigate. They said they saw a woman sitting behind the wheel of a white Pontiac Bonneville, but were shocked to find a man pinned underneath the vehicle.
Emergency crews had to lift the car off the unconscious man before he could be transported to West Houston Hospital, but he did not survive.
Detectives said April Chavez-Holmes and her husband, Donald Wesley Holmes, had been arguing earlier that day. The argument escalated that evening and the two got into some sort of fight on Balarama, where the husband ended up outside the car.
"They did get into an altercation here while she was in the car, somehow he got behind the car," said Sgt. Curtis Brown, Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Division. "She backed up over him and run him over, then pulled forward and backed over him again."
Detectives believe the husband was attempting to walk away from Holmes when she hit him. The couple did not live together. They are both 29 years old.
Deputies arrested Holmes and charged her with murder. Her bond was set at $50,000.
Another Houston case garnered national attention after a Houston dentist killed her husband in the same manner.
Back in 2002, Clara Harris ran over her husband, David, after finding out about her husband’s infidelity. David Harris, a prominent Houston orthodontist, was accused of cheating on his wife of 10 years. She snapped and ran her Mercedes Benz over him multiple times in a hotel parking lot, killing him in front of his teenage daughter.
Clara Harris was sentenced to 20 years for the crime in 2003.
