Richland Elementary School
RICHLAND HILLS — Richland Hills police are investigating after a second-grader brought a loaded handgun to school Wednesday morning.
Police said the weapon was discovered when the eight-year-old student tried to put it in his desk at Richland Elementary School and it fell to the floor.
Classmates told their teacher about the gun and the student was escorted to the office along with the weapon as police were summoned.
Investigators said the gun reportedly belongs to the boyfriend of the student's mother. The youngster said he took it sometime last night.
When questioned, the eight-year-old told police he didn't know why he brought the weapon to school and said he did not feel he needed it for protection.
While no charges will be filed against the student, Richland Hills police are investigating possible charges on the child's mother and her boyfriend for giving him access to the firearm.
