DALLAS — One man is in custody and another at large after an officer fired a shot at a suspect early Friday morning in Oak Cliff.
According to a statement from Dallas police spokesman Warren Mitchell, authorities were first alerted to an "armed encounter" at about 3 a.m. Friday in the 2900 block of W. Davis St. Undercover officers responding to the call heard gunshots and saw a fast-moving black SUV traveling in the area.
Mitchell said two suspect hopped out from the SUV and fled on foot in separate directions after the vehicle struck an unmarked police car. An officer then fired a shot at one of the suspects, who was seen throwing an unknown object under a nearby vehicle, according to an officer inside a police helicopter over the scene.
"The undercover officer, who was wearing a police identifier, gave loud verbal commands for the suspect to show his hands," Mitchell said. "The suspect, with his hands near his waistband, turned towards the undercover officers and raised an unknown object in the direction of the undercover officer. Fearing for his life, the undercover officer shot at the suspect, but missed."
Police did not reveal if they recovered and identified the object seen thrown under the vehicle or what — if anything — was in the hand of the suspect at the time of the shooting.
The suspect was taken into custody and the search for the second suspect continues. Authorities did not release a desciption of the second suspect.
