DALLAS – A Dallas mother accused of killing her one year old son told News 8 from jail she had "demons" inside of her.
Chloe Menager, 25, is now charged with capital murder for drowning the child. When asked directly if she killed her son, she said, "I can't answer that right now."
So Menager spoke vaguely of the death of her son who turned one year old in August, Elijahu Perez.
But police had enough details to charge her upon finding her and the dead child in their Oak Cliff apartment Thursday after she called her husband. He alerted officers who pulled him over as he raced home to check on Elijahu.
She said, "They say he drowned in the water. That's all I can say right now, because I don't really know what's going on."
Menager agreed to the interview if her face were not shown.
She frequently spoke of her faith, mentioning Yahweh or Elohim, the Old Testament Hebrew name for God.
"Everybody has their trials. And this is mine. And I'm not going to be weak. I'm going to serve Elohim the way I have to serve him," she said.
And of demons, "When you have something failing inside of you that opens doors to demons that torment you even more."
But she said no demons or voices told her to kill her son.
Whatever the personal conflict, she indicated she faced it alone. She said she has not been treated for mental illness nor is she taking medication.
Only that her son is better off, saying, "I know he's in a better place. I know he's with Yahweh."
Menager is held on $1 million bond and says she doesn't have an attorney yet.
