DALLAS -- Police have arrested a woman for leaving her four children alone in a running car while she went inside a store.

Latosha Ellis, 33, has been charged with four counts of child abandonment with the intent to return.

Just before 5 p.m. on May 19, an off-duty officer working near 7401 Samuell Boulevard was alerted to a 2001 GMC Yukon that was running in the parking lot with children inside.

According to an arrest affidavit, the officer spoke to the oldest child, a 7-year-old, who told him that their mother had been inside the store for about 10 minutes. The other children in the car were ages 5, 2 and 5 months old.

Police arrested Ellis and called Child Protective Services. The children's grandmother currently has custody of them.

The affidavit states that police arrested Ellis because they believe she put her children's lives in danger.

"The location is a high crime area where car jackings and robberies have occurred in the parking lot," the affidavit said.
