PARKER COUNTY - Less than four days after a paraplegic man was robbed and his assistance dog shot and killed in rural Parker County, sheriff's deputies have arrested one suspect and are closing in on another.

Deputies arrested Patrick Cox, 27, of Watauga on Friday.

"We have obtained evidence linking the suspect to the crime and another arrest is pending for an accomplice," said Parker County Sheriff Larry Fowler.

Billy Hammons, 37, a paraplegic from a car accident at age 19, said he had just laid down at 10:30 p.m. Monday when two masked men wearing coveralls kicked in his back door.

They pistol-whipped him and took more than $500 in cash before shooting and killing his 12-year-old assistance dog "Major."

Watauga officers stopped Cox on traffic violations Friday. He remains in custody there and will be extradited to Parker County to face aggravated robbery charges for Monday's incident.
