KEENE - A Johnson County sheriff's deputy hit and killed a pedestrian Thursday night after the pedestrian stepped into the road in front of the deputy's vehicle.
The sheriff's office and Keene police had been dispatched to help a man who was reportedly hitching hiking and waving his arms at passing motorists on the side of Highway 67, northeast of County Road 810. Deputies and officers could not locate the man.
At about 11:45 p.m. Thursday, a Johnson County Sheriff's Deputy identified as A. Jones, a 13-year veteran with the sheriff's office, was patrolling and traveling northwest bound on Highway 67. Rufus Lealfred Wilson, 56, of Cleburne walked from the shoulder of the roadway into the path of the deputy's vehicle.
Wilson was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
The Texas Department of Public Safety is conducting an investigation of the accident.
Johnson County Sheriff Bob Alford referred to the incident as an unfortunate accident, and expressed condolences to Wilson's family. The sheriff's office, as standard procedure, will conduct a separate investigation.
