HIGHLAND PARK - A preliminary report from the medical examiner said Highland Park businessman Rod Steele died by suicide, from a self-inflicted stab wound.

Toxicology tests could take weeks to complete though, and those will determine if Steele had any chemicals or medications in his system.

"At this point, it's preliminary," said Highland Park Police Sgt. Lance Koppa. "Results of toxicology may or may not add to what happened with this family."

Police say Dina Steele woke up at 4:15 a.m. Wednesday to find her husband standing above her with a knife. She fought him off, but was injured. She is now out of the hospital.

The couple's 16-year-old son heard the commotion and tried to intervene, but it was too late.

The family attended Highland Park United Methodist Church; there is a prayer service at the church Thursday night.
