BAYTOWN, Texas -- An ex-youth pastor and former employee of Houston’s Children’s Museum is accused of having an ongoing sexual relationship with a teenage girl.
According to police, it started when the girl was 15.
Mellony Scarlett Lewis reportedly met the girl at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in the Heights area.
Documents say Scarlett began picking the girl up on Sundays and would take her to church. She would then allegedly bring the girl back to her home in Baytown.
Investigators allege their sexual relationship began at Lewis’ residence in Baytown.
“You can’t trust people. Everyone’s got their own agenda. You can’t trust someone just because they’re a youth minister,” said Stephanie Cook, who lives two doors down from Lewis.
Investigators say the sexual relationship went on for years.
The girl’s parents eventually caught on, and at one point, police say Lewis and the girl were caught having sex in Chambers County.
The allegations were brought to the church, and Lewis was fired as youth minister.
Back then, the girl denied everything.
“Why didn’t the girl say something about it sooner,” said Louise Lewis, the suspect’s grandmother. “I just find this hard to believe.”
Lewis’ grandmother is standing behind her.
She says the 28-year-old has a 6-year-old daughter and is legally married. However, she says her granddaughter has been living separately from her husband.
“Clean living as far as I knew,” explained Louise Lewis. “I know her, and I know the kind of girl she is so I hope they won’t judge her unjustly.”
The girl reportedly broke off the relationship when she turned 18-years-old.
She told her story to investigators after learning that Lewis was employed at the Children’s Museum. The teen told police that she didn’t want Lewis taking advantage of any more children.
The Children’s Museum released the following statement:
“The safety of our children is of utmost concern to the Children’s Museum. All employees undergo background checks, drug screenings for employment at the Museum and periodic updates are undertaken. Ms. Lewis is no longer an employee of the Children’s Museum and we were unaware of her arrest.”
Lewis is currently locked up at the Harris County Jail on a $30,000 bond.
