DALLAS — Dallas police are now investigating a weekend assault on two men as a hate crime.

The victims were attacked and beaten with a baseball bat as they walked to a gay nightclub on Throckmorton Street in Dallas early Saturday morning.

The victims told News 8 their attackers yelled homophobic slurs as they were beaten.

"Based on derogatory statements made by the suspects during the commission of the robberies, these two offenses will be investigated as hate crimes," according to a statement issued by Dallas police Monday afternoon.

Police said no suspects have been identified and that detectives are continuing to interview witnesses. Police initially said they did not consider the attack to be a hate crime.
