DALLAS –– Dallas police are investigating a badly decomposed body found by a code enforcement officer in a shallow grave in a wooded area south of Loop 12 Friday afternoon.

Dallas police spokeswoman Sherri Jeffrey said the city employee stumbled across the body at about noon in the 3100 block of Persimmons Road. It was badly decomposed, however Jeffrey could not confirm rumors that the body had been burned.

Homicide detectives are on scene as well as cadaver dogs. Police did not find another body –– however, witnesses say a cemetery is nearby. The wooded area is full of overgrown weeds and grass.

Jeffrey said officers called cadaver dogs because "they observed signs of additional digging at the scene." Several dogs failed to find any other bodies. The body was taken to the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office who will determine his or her cause of death.

"This will be classified as an unexplained death pending the ME's report," Jeffrey said.

A production team for the A&E show The First 48 filmed the investigation.
