FORT WORTH  — John Bell, a 21-year veteran of the Fort Worth Police Department, was still in serious condition Wednesday evening, 24 hours after exchanging gunfire with a man who was fleeing from police.

The suspect was identified by the medical examiner's office as Cody Loron, 31.

Haltom City police said Loron was being pursued by officers in relation to a drug case.

He eventually ended up taking cover in the yard of an auto shop off Carson Street. Ironically, a few Fort Worth police officers were at the same location on an unrelated matter.

Brian Anderson, who owns a nearby business, captured part of what happened on his cell phone just after the shots rang out.

"They [police] had their guns drawn, and were looking inside the car on a guy that was there," Anderson said.

Loron was hauled out of the pickup truck and died a short time later.

Officer Bell was struck three times, according to sources, and remained in serious condition at Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital in Fort Worth.

"There were two or three people around him, trying to get him calmed down and wrapped up and out of there," Anderson said.

Loron has a criminal history, which most recently includes a drug arrest in Tarrant County in 2011.

The Fort Worth Police Officers' Award Foundation has established a fund for people who wish to contribute to Officer Bell's recovery. Online donations are being accepted at this link; make a note that the donation is "for the officer injured on 1/29/2013."
