CARROLLTON — Residents of a Carrollton neighborhood are living in fear, nearly one week after a mother of three was shot outside her home.

Police aren't talking about the case, and that's causing rumors to circulate — along with concern.

"It makes me quite nervous, to be honest," said neighbor Stacey Lee. She lives next door to Nancy Howard and her family.

On Saturday night, a gunman walked up Howard's driveway in the back of her home and shot her in the head.

Her family posted this account of what happened on the CaringBridge website:

"A man came into the garage as she was arriving home, just before she exited her car, and shot her once, just above her left eye. My mom was able to call 911 and talk with the dispatcher and EMTs before they intubated and sedated her."

"I don't know if this is a person targeting our neighborhood," Lee said. "If it is, I'm very afraid about that, because I have three small children."

Howard has had multiple surgeries and lost her left eye. Her family has detailed a painful account of her recovery.

Carrollton Police aren't saying anything about the case, and that is fueling speculation. Residents in the area are scared.

"We are making sure now that the door is all the way down when we get out of the car — especially with kids — and trying not to travel at nighttime.... things like that," she said.

Howard, also a mother of three, is a member of First Baptist Church in Carrollton. Friends and family have asked the community for prayers.

Police have listed this as an "attempted capital murder" on an official report. When News 8 asked them for details, they said the investigation is a sensitive one, but once the facts are released it will be evident why they were unable to discuss the case.
