Police in Miami have taken three people into custody Tuesday in connection with an early morning shooting spree outside an apartment building that injured at least eight people and left two dead, WPLG reports.

The shootings occurred around 2 a.m. at Northwest 12th Avenue and 65th Street in Miami's Liberty City.

One of the victims died at the scene, and the other died at a hospital, NBC Miami reports.

The Miami Herald, quoting police, says two men stopped on the street across from the housing complex and began spraying the area with bullets from assault weapons. Dozens of markers indicate bullet casings along the ground and on the walls of the apartment building.

One woman tells NBC that her 17-year-old sister was shot at the scene and rushed to the hospital.
