FREEPORT, Texas (AP) — A South Texas man has been accused of scalding his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter for lying and the adults allegedly withheld medical help for more than a week.

The Brazoria County Sheriff's Office says Brad Barker and Mandy Milstead were being held Wednesday on charges of injury to a child. Milstead's daughter was seriously burned May 24 at home in Freeport.

Authorities believe Barker put the girl in scalding water as punishment for "telling lies." Milstead took her daughter to a Galveston hospital June 1. The youngster, whose name hasn't been released, remains in intensive care with burns from the waist down.

Barker's bond was set at $500,000 bond. Milstead's bond is $150,000. No attorneys are listed for the couple arrested Tuesday.

Details of the alleged lies haven't been released.
