FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — A Fort Worth jury has decided a 33-year-old mother of seven should go to prison for 27 years for beating her 6-year-old daughter over a long time, leaving the child blind and developmentally disabled.
The jury's decision on sentencing Friday came a day after they convicted April Chavunne Brown of causing serious bodily injury to a child.
Evidence showed Brown last April brought the girl to a hospital and said black eyes, broken teeth and other injuries were due to seizures and falling. But doctors determined the child was malnourished, had traumatic brain injury, scars and broken bones in various stages of healing. The girl, now in foster care, was hospitalized for more than a month.
Evidence showed five different men were fathers of Brown's seven children.
