MANVEL, Texas (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of a 16-year-old while they say he was restrained at a Brazoria County residential treatment center that's under state scrutiny for allegations of abuse.

The Brazoria County Sheriff's Department says emergency responders were summoned Friday to the Daystar Facility in Manvel, about 25 miles south of Houston. The boy was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The sheriff's department said Monday an investigation shows unspecified "restraint techniques" were used on the boy and the preliminary cause of death "is thought to be asphyxiation."

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services assigned a state monitor to Daystar after reports earlier this year that developmentally disabled girls there were provoked into fighting to win snacks.
