National Football League fans are in for a big change this coming preseason. The league has announced a new, tighter policy regarding bags brought into stadiums.
Fans are limited to bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed the measurements of 12 inches by 6 inches by 12 inches or one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags, like a Ziploc storage bag.
As for purses, ladies are limited to one small clutch no bigger than their hand, with or without a handle or strap. Purses that fit these requirements may be taken into the stadium in addition to one clear plastic bag.
According to the NFL, the new policy limits the size and types of bags to “provide a safer environment for the public and significantly expedite fan entry into stadium.” The league noted the Boston Marathon bombings as a "factor taken into account," but said they update their policy every year.
Fans may purchase NFL-approved clear plastic totes through club merchandise outlets or at NFLShop.com.
An exception to the rule will be made for those with medically-necessary items after a proper inspection at a designated gate.
In May, the NFL Committee on Stadium Security unanimously recommended the implementation of the new policy for the coming season. With the new policy in place, the NFL said fans will “be able to enjoy their tailgate activities in the parking lots and to do so with greater safety and the knowledge that their entry into the stadium will be smoother and faster.”
