Poll:
Would you participate in the Pizza Patron promotion?

DALLAS - The offer raised controversy when it was announced, but that didn't stop massive crowds at Pizza Patron locations for their free pizza offer Tuesday evening.

The Dallas-based carry out pizza chain was offering a free large pepperoni pie to customers who asked, "Pizza, por favor" from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The promotion caused controversy because it required customers to order in Spanish to get the free pizza.

The offer attracted lines of hundreds of customers at Pizza Patron locations on Jefferson Avenue in Oak Cliff and on Ross Avenue in downtown Dallas.

In Oak Cliff, street vendors walked along the long line selling ice cream and snacks to those waiting. But even those left in the line at 8 p.m. were offered a coupon for a future free pizza.

The chain expected to give away about 80,000 pizzas Tuesday across the country. The Oak Cliff location braced to serve up 100 pizzas an hour during the promotion.
