If you get locked out of your home or your car, a locksmith can be your lifeline.

But before you hire one, make sure he's reputable so you don't get ripped-off.

The folks at the online consumer web site Angie's List say the best thing to do is shop for one before you need one.

Many people skip the screening process because it's an emergency. That's opened the door to swindlers offering emergency lockout services.

"They usually show up, tell you it's a high-security lock that they have to drill it. I've seen them use hammers pliers, everything else and just tear the lock off or they might damage a car. Then you get a bill for many times over than what they quoted you", says locksmith Barry Campbell.

Also, make sure the person is licensed and can provide you with solid credentials before he does any work. And always get the price in writing.
