Summertime is just around the corner, but can your air-conditioner beat the heat?

Highly-rated service specialists tell consumer web site Angie's List that the majority of costly emergency repairs can be traced back to poor maintenance.

They say each year your air conditioner goes without maintenance, it loses 5% of its overall efficiency.

Finding potential problems before they happen will avoid unexpected break-downs during summer and save you emergency repair bills.

"If the outdoor coils are dirty, if the cooling capacity is not up to par and they are not getting air flow out things like that can show that the air-conditioner needs to be tuned up" says service technician Darren Scaggs.

A properly maintained AC can save you up to 15% on your monthly bill. And units that are properly shaded can also run more efficiently.

Also, keep plants, shrubs and other landscaping from two to four feet away from the outdoor unit to ensure proper air flow.
