The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled 500,000 drop-side cribs sold at some of the nation's biggest retailers.  They are linked to the deaths of three babies.

They are branded Generation 2 Worldwide or ChildESIGNS,  and they are sold at Buy Buy Baby, Kmart, Wal-Mart, and other retailers.

Plastic hardware on the drop-side cribs can break causing the side to detach.  Mattress supports can also break away.  Both problems cause gaps where a baby can be trapped and either suffocate or strangle.

The deaths of three babies in Ohio, Indiana and Virginia are linked to the cribs, dating back to 2003.  The CPSC has also received 28 other reports of crib problems.

The manufacturer went out of business in 2005, but its products were still sold nationwide.

Owners should contact the store where the crib was purchased for information on refunds or replacements.
