On Wednesday, Dallas police say an excavation crew working near Fair Park found the body of a man who has been missing for more than three weeks.
Vashana Eugene Mims, 36, was reported missing on February 5. According to a police report, Mims was on his way to the Larry Johnson Recreation Center at 3700 Dixon Avenue to play basketball with a few Dallas officers. But he never made it; a friend of his told investigators that Mims rode with him to the gym, but that was the last he saw of him.
According to a police report, Mims called a woman –– who later reported him missing –– and asked about his children. The woman told officers that Mims said he was on his way, but never showed up.
On Wednesday, work crews were roughly a half-mile away from the rec center in the 5300 block of Second Avenue when they saw something that resembled a body in a nearby creek bed. Investigators soon identified the body as Mims.
Dallas police say it appears a tree fell on him, but a official cause of death is pending an autopsy by the Dallas County Medical Examiner.
