DALLAS — Work is now moving forward to rebuild the home of Vernon Freeman.
For months, the 85-year-old would sit outside his burned-out residence. He had no insurance, but didn't want to leave.
After Freeman's story appeared on News 8 in September, volunteers and companies have been stepping up, working on the weekends to rebuild his Dallas home.
"I don't care if we have to go have a bake sale on the street, we're going to keep raising money and we're going to get it done," pledged Wendy Hayes, organizer of this relief effort.
There's still a lot left to do. Donations are coming in, but volunteers said it will take several more months of work before Freeman's home is finished.
"I'm thankful," Freeman said. "I'm glad they help... more than glad. I don't know how to get there to more than glad."
