MIDLOTHIAN — It's tough enough when you lose one local hero. But as one neighbor of Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield told News 8 on Sunday, "We've lost two great heroes and family men."

Friends and neighbors described the two men who were murdered Saturday at an Erath County gun range as close friends who did a lot together.

Kyle and Littlefield both had family in close-knit Midlothian; Littlefield's wife is an assistant principal at a local school and Kyle was also married and raising two children.

Flag after flag was at half staff throughout the town as the community tries to come to grips with what everyone is calling a huge loss.

Lauren Brumbaugh remembers when Kyle came to her school to speak at an assembly.

"It was really awesome, because he didn't sugar-coat things," she said. "He was just so inspirational to all of us, and basically told us the graduating seniors, like: don't mess around, go to school, and just basically inspired all of us to be maybe just a fraction of what he was."

Neighbor Chris Calhoun remembered the time that Kyle stopped by to help move a tree that had toppled in a storm.

"Couldn't ask for a better person to live next to, that's for sure," Calhoun said. "We had a good person die for an awful reason."

Kyle's security company released a statement Sunday calling the men "trusted" friends and asking for privacy for the families.
