DENTON — Two people were killed Saturday night in a four-vehicle pileup west of Denton.
Denton police spokesman Ryan Grelle said a Nissan Altima traveling west in the 8100 block of West University Drive drifted into the eastbound lane of the two-lane highway just before 9 o'clock.
The Altima first sideswiped a Lexus, sending it into a spin and injuring its 33-year-old driver.
The Altima then slammed almost head-on into an eastbound Toyota Tacoma pickup truck, which appeared to send the truck crashing into a PT Cruiser.
The driver of the Altima, 57-year-old Rhonda Barney of Carrollton, was trapped in the wreckage and died at the scene.
Ryan Abraham of Ponder, the 21-year-old driver of the pickup truck, may have been thrown from his vehicle and was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Denton.
Grelle said two people traveling in the PT Cruiser were also injured: A 20-year-old woman who suffered a broken ankle and a 29-year-old man who was airlifted to a Plano hospital for treatment of head injuries.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
