AUSTIN — A second-story wooden deck collapsed at a house party in North Austin on Saturday night.
Fire officials said six people were taken to area hospitals after the 15-foot fall; two of them suffered serious injuries. Four others were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
"We had people that were trapped in and among about a 500-yard area that were trapped in and among the wooden deck," Austin Fire Department spokesman Palmer Buck said. "Firefighters and EMS did a great job getting the people sorted out and getting them out of the collapsed area."
There were 20 people on the backyard deck on Doe Valley Lane when it collapsed around 7:30 p.m.
Fire department officials said deck collapses are not uncommon, with a total of four reported in the past five years.
